It is similar to a handbag carried with traditional Japanese attire, so it can be used not only for tea ceremony occasions but also when going out in kimono. Tenpyō Sōkamon Nishiki features a pattern in which vertical stripes of six-petaled floral motifs alternate with vertical stripes of diamond-shaped floral motifs. This design shows an early stage in the development of karahana (Chinese floral) patterns, without distinction between primary and secondary motifs. Similar patterns can be found on the hanpi (short-sleeved upper garment) of gigaku and bugaku dance costumes among the treasures of the Shōsōin Repository.
