Urushi lacquer is used in the finishing process, and the pieces are made through many stages, including polishing the wooden base, sealing the wood grain, applying the undercoat, final polishing, applying rubbed lacquer, wrapping with kokuso, applying rubbed lacquer again, applying the topcoat, and drying. Hida Shunkei lacquerware is a traditional Japanese craft that has been passed down for 400 years. Authentic Shunkei lacquerware has a dark color when newly lacquered, but over many years, the color gradually becomes lighter, eventually allowing the wooden base to show through. As the color becomes lighter, the lacquer coating simultaneously becomes harder and more durable. Shunkei lacquerware gradually reaches its completed form over the course of many years.
