Hemp cloth shaped into long plates is repeatedly coated with lacquer and dried many times, resulting in lacquerware that requires a large amount of urushi and considerable craftsmanship. The texture of the hemp fabric is visible on the surface, and the slight irregularities along the edges give it a distinctive, rustic character unique to cloth. Each piece is individually handmade and hand-lacquered, so there are slight variations, allowing you to appreciate the individuality of each plate. The color features a शांत, subdued tone created by a blend of vermilion and black, finished in the Goto-nuri style. Goto-nuri is a lacquering technique perfected by Goto Taihei in 1869 (Meiji 2). This method was inspired by the naturally occurring patterns formed by dust particles adhering to lacquered surfaces, which create uniquely organic designs. Goto-nuri is completed through more than twenty processing steps, making it exceptionally durable. Over time, the underlying vermilion lacquer gradually becomes visible, developing into a beautiful and refined coloration. The combination of vermilion and black represents a harmonious balance of color, and its timeless aesthetic is considered a classic of lacquer finishing techniques. Goto-nuri was designated as a traditional craft of Japan in 1976. These pieces are lightweight, have a distinctive luster, and convey a sense of luxury.
