Tokoname ware teapots are said to mellow the flavor of tea because the clay contains a high amount of iron. Most kyusu teapots are round in shape, but this one has been made low and flat in the ultimate form designed to bring out the fullest flavor of tea. Because of its wide diameter, the tea leaves can open more quickly and fully, allowing them to spread evenly and resulting in a richer, more delicious infusion. Even with a small amount of hot water, the leaves can easily expand, making it easier to draw out their full flavor. Since the leaves open faster and more fully, this teapot can also be used for mizudashi reicha (cold-brew green tea). “Mizudashi reicha” refers to sencha brewed with cold water. By not using hot water, the bitter components of the tea are suppressed, producing a sencha with greater sweetness and umami. With a capacity of 190cc, this teapot is ideal for brewing and pouring a single serving. Using a metal mesh can affect the flavor of tea, so a finely crafted ceramic strainer is attached to the inside of the spout. Both the strainer and the teapot body are entirely handmade, created with the refined skills of an experienced craftsman. It is a work by Kōyō Hayashi. The wheel-thrown body is intentionally altered into an irregular shape, and a pouring spout has been added. A katakuchi bowl is a vessel with a spout; while some are decorative, the spout of this piece is fully pierced, allowing liquids such as sauces or broths to be poured. Throwing marks from the wheel remain on the body, and the clay reveals small stones and pinholes, creating a rustic yet richly expressive surface. The irregular flow and drips of the white glaze are also among its highlights. The glazed areas have a smooth, silky feel, while the unglazed portions offer the slightly rough texture unique to earthenware. Relatively lightweight for a clay piece, it is comfortable for everyday use. With its wide opening, it is easy to serve food, and its compact size makes it versatile for a variety of dishes.
