Ichijū-giri is the name of a particular cutting style for bamboo flower vases, referring to a vase in which a single window is cut for arranging flowers. On the reverse side, there is a section designed to hang a nail, allowing it to be used as a hanging flower vase. This piece shares the same form as the famous bamboo flower vases known as “Odawara,” said to have been made by Sen no Rikyū from bamboo in Nirayama, Izu, when he accompanied Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the Odawara campaign and later presented to Kokei Sōchin of Daitoku-ji, and “Onjō-ji,” which Sen no Rikyū is said to have made by cutting bamboo during Hideyoshi’s Odawara campaign and giving it to his son Sōan. As both are examples of ichijū-giri, this form may be considered the bamboo flower vase style most favored by Sen no Rikyū. White bamboo is used, but natural darkened tones appear in places around the body, creating a subdued, wabi aesthetic. The bamboo has five nodes. Among the representative types of Mino ware is Shino ware. It is a style of pottery not found in other production areas. When speaking of Shino ware, the Syozan Kiln of Mr. Ryoji Hayashi is particularly well known. There are various types of Shino ware, and this matcha bowl is known as Aka-Shino. It is lighter in tone than Aka-Shino (red Shino) and deeper than Beni-Shino (crimson Shino), featuring an intermediate hue between red and crimson. It has been finished as a very rare and seldom-seen type of Shino ware. The light reddish-brown color shows subtle gradations in tone, giving it a texture that allows one to fully appreciate the character of fired pottery. Countless pinholes characteristic of Shino ware can be seen throughout, and highlights include areas of flowing white glaze and complex kiln effects. The potter’s finger marks from the glazing process remain visible, becoming part of the bowl’s visual landscape. Faint wheel marks can be seen, with vertical carving appearing in various places. These irregularities fit comfortably in the hand, making the bowl easy to hold. The form is a straight-sided, cylindrical shape with ample depth, a perfectly sized piece that fits well in the hand and conveys a sense of strength. Shippo is a type of traditional pattern composed of four interlinked spindle-shaped forms, creating an “overlapping rings” design. The circular motifs symbolize the continuation of harmony and are considered an auspicious, celebratory pattern. In the tea ceremony, it frequently appears and is regarded as a classic motif. The Hassun is one of the utensils used in Kaiseki cuisine in the tea ceremony. It is made from red cedar wood, and its name derives from the fact that it is a square tray with sides of one “hassun” (approximately 8 sun) in length. The side boards rise vertically, and the corners are notched on the inside and gently bent into rounded form. On one side of the rim, there is a decorative binding of cherry bark. This tray is used to serve two to three varieties of delicacies from the mountains, sea, rivers, and village, in small portions, as a dish for exchanging cups between host and guest. Although there are variations made of lacquerware, Ikkanbari (paper-lacquer), or ceramics, the most common and traditional form is this cedar Hassun, whose size and shape are largely standardized. Because it is lightweight and made from natural materials, it may also be used creatively in other settings to provide an elegant presentation. Before use, lightly wetting the surface of the wooden tray helps prevent stains and residue from adhering. A kizue consists of four boards, nearly identical in size to the lid of a chabako (tea box), bound together with purple braided cords. During the “Moon” procedure of the Setsugetsuka (Snow–Moon–Flower) temae of the tea box, the kizue is unfolded and the tea utensils are placed on it for the preparation. This piece makes use of the natural paulownia wood base as it is, with no lacquer coating applied. The beautiful wood grain of paulownia can be fully appreciated, allowing the warmth of the wood to be felt directly, while still conveying an elegant and luxurious character. The bare wood gives off a gentle atmosphere, evoking a sense of softness and warmth.
