絵柄はオランダ写しとなっていますが、

この「オランダ」とは江戸時代にオランダ船

で日本にもたらされた陶磁器の総称ですが

茶道などでは、この抹茶碗に描かれている

黄色と青色の半分ずつで描かれている

「煙草の葉」が描かれている柄を

「オランダ」と呼んでいます。

この柄は、抹茶碗や水指などに広く使われ、

茶人の間でも古来より尊重されてきました。

藍や黄で「煙草の葉」が唐草文様の間に

大きく描かれていて絵筆が生き生きと

しているのが特徴ですが、絵柄はそれぞれ

異なります。

こちらの三点セットは白土を使った

土物ですが、表面に貫入がたくさん見られ

持つと軽くて繊細な感じを受けます。

柄は藍色を主体に描かれていますが、黄色や

赤、緑など様々な色が使われています。

絵柄もよく描かれていて雰囲気も元気のある

いい感じに仕上がっています。

Introducing a three-piece “Oranda Utsushi” set consisting of a matcha bowl, a furidashi (small confectionery container), and a chakin-tsutsu (tea cloth holder), designed for use with chabako (portable tea sets) or nodate kago (outdoor tea ceremony baskets).

Each piece is made in a compact size, suitable for carrying in a tea box or basket, allowing you to enjoy tea outdoors or while traveling. It can be described as a portable tea ceremony set.

The chakin-tsutsu is used to hold the chakin (tea cloth), while the furidashi—whose name comes from the way it is used, “to pour out” small sweets such as konpeitō (sugar candies)—serves as a small confectionery container. The matcha bowl is also made smaller than usual for ease of portability.

The design is known as Oranda Utsushi (“Dutch-style imitation”). Here, “Oranda” refers not specifically to the Netherlands, but to a general term used in the Edo period for imported ceramics brought to Japan by Dutch ships. In the context of tea utensils, however, the term Oranda usually refers to the motif of “tobacco leaves” painted in halves of yellow and blue, as seen on this matcha bowl.

This Oranda pattern, depicting large tobacco leaves among arabesque (karakusa) motifs in blue and yellow, has long been cherished by tea practitioners and is widely used on tea utensils such as matcha bowls and fresh-water jars (mizusashi). The painting style is characterized by lively brushwork, though each piece features a slightly different composition.

This three-piece set is made of earthenware using white clay. Numerous fine crackles (kan’nyū) can be seen on the surface, and the pieces feel light and delicate in the hand. While blue is the dominant color, other hues such as yellow, red, and green are also used. The patterns are vividly painted, resulting in a lively and cheerful impression overall.
