清水焼から三代　山川巖作の陶額のご紹介です。

陶額とは、板状の陶器に絵付けをして焼いたものを

額に入れて飾るものです。

通常絵などは、紙やキャンパスに描いたものを額に入れて飾りますが

陶器に描いた絵は、紙やキャンパスに描いたものとは

趣きや雰囲気が異なり、独特な風合いが出て参ります。

また、紙やキャンパスなどに描いたものは水彩画や油絵でも、経年劣化があり

時代が経つと色があせたり変色して、元の色彩を維持することは

難しくなってきます。

従って、いずれは画の修復作業というものが必要となってきます。

しかし、陶板に絵付けをしたものは、何百度場合によっては千度以上で

焼き上げるので、経年劣化が起こりにくく、変色も極めて少ないので

元々の画の色をほぼ初期の状態のまま、維持することが出来ます。

劣化がほとんどない、陶額は非常に永く飾って頂けるという利点があります。

作家の山川巖氏は、茶道具である抹茶椀などを作っておられ、茶陶に携わっているので

こうした趣のある絵柄も描かれています。

この「雪笹」もよく抹茶碗の絵柄に使われることがあります。

文字通り雪が積もった笹が描かれていますが、これは冬の情景を描いただけではなく

厳しい冬に竹や笹がじっと耐え忍んでいるようにも見えます。

鉄釉で竹や笹を表現し、一部金色も使われて変化がつけられています。

雪は白い釉薬で表現されています。

緑色も使われデザイン上のポイントとなっています。

「耐え忍ぶ」大切さという解釈だと、奥深い意味を持ってきます。

Kiyomizu Ware – Ceramic Plaque “Yukizasa”

This is an introduction to a ceramic plaque (tōgaku) created by Yamakawa Iwao, third-generation potter of Kiyomizu ware.

A tōgaku is a decorative artwork in which a picture is painted onto a flat ceramic panel and then fired, after which it is mounted in a frame for display.

While paintings normally use paper or canvas, artwork painted on ceramic differs greatly in character and atmosphere, producing a unique and distinctive aesthetic. Furthermore, works painted on paper or canvas—whether watercolor or oil—necessarily undergo aging. Over time, colors may fade or discolor, making it difficult to preserve the original hues. Consequently, restoration work eventually becomes necessary.

In contrast, ceramic plaques painted on fired clay are subjected to temperatures of several hundred degrees—sometimes exceeding 1,000°C. Because of this, they are far less susceptible to age-related deterioration or discoloration, and the original colors can be preserved almost as they were when first created. One of the major advantages of ceramic plaques is their longevity and resistance to degradation.

The artist, Yamakawa Iwao, is known for crafting tea utensils such as matcha bowls. His involvement in tea ceramics informs the refined sensibility reflected in his pictorial works. The “Yukizasa” (Snow on Bamboo Grass) motif is also frequently seen on matcha bowls.

As the name suggests, the design depicts bamboo grass weighed down with snow. However, beyond representing a winter scene, it can also evoke the image of bamboo enduring the severity of winter with quiet resilience.

The bamboo and bamboo grass are rendered in iron glaze, with touches of gold adding variation. The snow is expressed with white glaze, while green accents provide a visual highlight within the composition.

Interpreting the piece through the theme of “endurance” brings a deeper meaning to the work.

这幅《雪笹》也是抹茶碗上常见的图案之一。

竹与笹以铁釉表现，并局部点缀金色以增添变化。
积雪则以白釉来表现。
