Kiyomizu Ware – Elegant Set of 5 Lidded Teacups

This is a set of five lidded teacups from Kiyomizu ware.

Lidded teacups are traditionally used when serving tea to special guests or on formal occasions. The lids help prevent dust from entering and keep the tea warm in colder seasons, but more importantly, they are reserved for serving tea to temple priests, honored visitors, and other distinguished guests. They are also commonly used at yuinō (betrothal ceremonies) and at other formal gatherings such as weddings, funerals, and ceremonial events.

The design carries an air of dignity, with white as its base tone. On a vermilion ground, fine patterns are hand-painted in gold. These appear in three places: on the knob of the lid, along the rim on the underside of the lid, and on the foot of the teacup itself.

The surface of the knob is finished in gold with delicately painted floral motifs. Other areas display wave-like patterns, where the contrast of white, vermilion, and gold shines beautifully.

Inside the cup, tasteful blue-and-white painted motifs add refinement.

Though simple in form, this set of lidded teacups embodies elegance and grace.
