The production process involves numerous painstaking steps, including wood surface polishing, pore filling, undercoating, finish polishing, suri-urushi (rubbing lacquer into the wood), kokuso-maki (filling and reinforcing joints with a traditional lacquer-based compound), additional suri-urushi, final coating, and drying.
Hida Shunkei lacquerware is a traditional Japanese craft with a history spanning more than 400 years.
Authentic Shunkei lacquerware has a rich, deep color when newly finished. Over the years, however, the lacquer gradually becomes lighter, eventually allowing the beautiful natural grain of the wood beneath to show through.
As the color lightens, the lacquer coating also becomes harder and more durable.
Shunkei lacquerware continues to mature over many years, gradually reaching its completed beauty with age.
The lacquer coating continues to "breathe" almost permanently, providing excellent breathability and natural antibacterial properties.
