This is an exceptionally sturdy and highly durable bento box.
The wooden base is made from timber taken from trees that are 150 to 200 years old. Because wood naturally changes shape over time, the material is carefully dried for several years under well-ventilated conditions before it is used.
The finish is applied using natural urushi lacquer. Each piece is created through numerous painstaking processes, including wood surface polishing, pore filling, undercoating, final surface polishing, wiped lacquer application (suri-urushi), kokuso-maki reinforcement, an additional wiped lacquer coating, final coating, and drying.
The lacquer coating continues to "breathe" almost permanently, providing excellent breathability. Urushi lacquer itself also has natural antibacterial properties that help protect food from harmful bacteria, making the contents of the bento box or jubako food box less likely to spoil.
In addition, because it is made of wood, it naturally absorbs excess moisture when humidity is high and releases moisture when the air is dry, helping to maintain the ideal humidity inside the box. This prevents food from drying out excessively and keeps rice from becoming soggy due to excess condensation.
