Odo Ware – Pine Cone Incense Container by Shōji Doi
We are pleased to introduce a handmade incense container by Shōji Doi, crafted in the Odo ware tradition.
A kōgō is a lidded container used to hold incense, primarily for the Japanese tea ceremony.
It may be brought out during the charcoal procedure, placed inside a charcoal container, or displayed in the tokonoma (alcove) on top of a kobukusa (small silk cloth used in the tea ceremony) or a paper kama-shik i (paper mat for placing the kettle).
A kōgō is also appreciated as an object of artistic contemplation. Although it is a small vessel, it conveys a great deal through its seasonal associations, the theme of a tea gathering, its historical significance, place of origin, materials, and other characteristics.
Kōgō used for the sunken hearth (ro) are often made of ceramic because they hold nerikō (kneaded incense). In contrast, kōgō used for the portable brazier (furo) are often made of lacquerware because they hold aromatic wood.
Odo ware is said to have originated in 1653, the second year of the Jōō era, in the early Edo period. At the command of Yamauchi Tadayoshi, lord of the Tosa Domain, a potter named Kuno Shōhaku was invited from Osaka to establish a kiln in Ozu-chō (Odo), in the castle town of Kōchi.
Odo ware is characterized by its refined forms, softly colored clay surfaces, and fine crazing in the glaze.
This incense container is made from white clay and shaped in the form of a pine cone.
The surface features exceptionally fine relief details, faithfully reproducing the appearance of a real pine cone.
Its overall color is a fresh, clean white, with fine crazing visible across the surface.
As pine cones are commonly seen from autumn through winter, this kōgō is particularly suitable for use during these seasons.
