信楽焼　高橋楽斎 作　狸（たぬき）香合

信楽焼から高橋楽斎 作の香合のご紹介です。

信楽の粗い土を手ごねで作った狸（たぬき）の香合です。

香合とは、主に茶道で使う香を入れておく器で

棚や床の間に飾ったりして、鑑賞の対象となります。

炉用は練香を入れるので陶磁器製が多く、風炉用は

香木を入れるので、漆器が多くなります。

香合の裏側や蓋を開けると小石の混じった土が確認でき

信楽らしい力強い風合いを感じることができます。

狸は夜行性であることから、茶道では夜咄（よばなし）の

茶事で使われることが多いようです。

夜咄（よばなし）とは厳冬期の夜間に行われる

ろうそくの灯りのみで行う幻想的な茶事のことです。

また、狸は縁起もいいので、茶事の趣向に応じて

使うことができます。

お腹が大きくユーモラスな姿は話題にもなりそうです。

Shigaraki Ware – Takahashi Rakusai-made Tanuki Incense Container

We are pleased to introduce an incense container in the shape of a tanuki (raccoon dog), made by Takahashi Rakusai from Shigaraki ware.

This tanuki incense container is handmade using Shigaraki's coarse clay.

An incense container, or kōgō, is a vessel used in the tea ceremony to hold incense, and it is often displayed on shelves or in the tokonoma (alcove) as an object of admiration.

For the ro (sunken hearth), ceramic containers are commonly used to hold kneaded incense, while for the furo (portable brazier), lacquerware is typically used to hold aromatic wood.

On the underside and inside the lid of the container, you can see the coarse, stone-mixed clay, which conveys the robust texture typical of Shigaraki ware.

The tanuki, being nocturnal, is often used in tea ceremonies held during the evening, particularly during the yobanashi tea gathering.

Yobanashi refers to a mystical tea ceremony held in the dead of winter, lit only by candlelight.

Additionally, the tanuki is considered auspicious, making it suitable for use in various tea ceremonies depending on the theme.

Its large, round belly and humorous appearance are sure to be a conversation starter.
